1. Physical collage
Gathering Materials
The materials I used for my collage are mostly from old fashion magazines, school magazines, stickers and black papers and artboards as the base. My theme direction will be towards fashion.
Pre - Composition 1
With the cutouts from the magazine, I decided to start composing my collage by using most big and bold letters to give the meaning of confidence to every fashion models. I decided to add some fashion elements and try to balance the color between white and red to give off that visual contrast. I decided to use black color paper as the base. This was my first attempt at collaging but I felt that it was too simple and it lacks that pizzazz that I am looking for.
Pre - Composition 2
For the second composition, I decided to play around by mixing all kinds of different elements that I could find and also try to include a few of my favorite things which are cartoon stickers. I also used a black paper as the base. I was not entirely there yet with the composition and therefore I decided to explore more.
Pre - Composition 3
Before I started on my third composition, I decided to look up for reference on how a fashion collage would look like. It gave me ideas on how to rearrange the composition and use the cutouts that I provided. This gave me a clearer vision on how I want it to look.
In the end, this ended up one of my most favorite collage out of the three. My lecturer agrees with me that this has more potential compare to the other two. I was suggested that maybe I could pick different words and try to make it look less promotional. With this, I decided to further improve my collage and make a few changes. I decided to convey that meaning that no matter how you look, you always look beautiful. I want to bring a special message that all women should believe in their confidence and be able to express their beauty freely however they want.
Pre - Composition 4
As I have said, I decided to choose different words that makes more sense and fits well with my composition. I decided to go this as my final physical collage.
Final Physical Collage
Concept
My collage is to show that women are strong and powerful that they have the capability to achieve success. I decided to add "stronger" and "perfect" to accentuate that message. I added a few cutouts of colorful wallpapers from the magazine to create a visual contrast from the text and newspapers. I wanted to show that all women are equal no matter what kind of features they have.
2. Digital Collage
Composition 1
For the first composition, I decided to play around with Rule of Third as the guidelines. The picture that I had in mind when I composed this is that I want it to look like a planet being surrounded by living things and non-living things. Another one that I had in mind was to look like a rocket. I decided to leave the background white to make it look less messy and simple.
Composition 2
1. Photo Manipulation
Part 1: Hearst Mansion and Shazam digital collage
Fig.5.1 Hearst Mansion Digital Collage Tutorial
As we begin, we start off a digital collage with Shazam and the mansion through the tutorial.
For part 2, we are assigned to take a full body self-portrait of ourselves from eye-level and edit it into the mansion based on the previous tutorial. I decided to go for an outdoor shooting with plain background and proper lighting to make the process a little easier.
2. Recoloring Black and White
Part 1: Recoloring with brush tool
In the second task, it involves applying colors to black and white images by following the tutorial video provided.

Part 2: Recoloring with layer masks (Advanced Recoloring)

In this tutorial, our objective is to follow the demonstration that shows the advanced coloring technique.

Upon from finishing the demo image, we move on the next stage by choosing a black and white image from the provided Google Drive. I have opted to choose a portrait of Harry Styles.
I decided to use the same reference image for the first one because they have slightly similar skin tones and hair color. For this exercise, I also decided to change the levels by adjusting the brightness of the skin because it looks too pale. Therefore, I decided to make it slightly darker.

Another one that I had in mind was to look like a rocket. I decided to leave the background white to make it look less messy and simple.
Composition 2
For this composition, I decided to use the Golden Ratio. I want this composition to mainly focus on the movement on the fish to the plants. I decided to connect these two elements by going downwards. I added a circular background so that it is aligned to the plants and fish. My initial though of this was to follow a figure of a cartoon character. The fish represents the hair and nose, the circular as the face and the leaves and buildings as the shoulders. My lecturer said that he liked this composition the most.
Composition 3
PROJECT 1B: HEARST MANSION & RECOLORING B&WComposition 3
I attempted to use Rule of Third for the third composition. The concept for this arrangement is reflection. I decided to place some of the elements above upside down. I used different elements purposely to give that an alternate reality theme. I attempted to create a border in between that separates between the two. However, I struggled a little because the pictures somehow got blurry during the process.
Tone adjustments
Fig.3.2 Tone adjustments - Week 4 (27/4/2023)
Tone adjustments
Just as we were instructed, I decided to make some adjustment layer to my collage by changing its brightness and vibrance. I decided to make it slightly brighter because I think that the color are slightly dull for me. I did not want the collage to look pale so I added more contrast and brightness to the background.

FEEDBACK
Week 2: The composition is good. You have a lot of layers to it but it is well balanced. Maybe you can change the wordings to a different word.
Week 4: The second composition is good. I like the flowy movement of it.
Week 7: For a suggestion, you may change the adjustments on the levels to darken the skin color.

REFLECTION
Experience
Overall my experience with collage has been much better than I expected. Collage is not something that I have done for the first time but to incorporate the relation between collage and Photoshop is something I had never done before. I find this concept to be most interesting because it helps me realize that digital collaging can be seen as cutting out pieces of paper and put it them together. In this case, I have learnt to use the tools they provided instead which have similar concepts but can be use it in different ways. Besides that, I think I struggled slightly with the recoloring procedures at the beginning. However, with further practice and a few errors I finally manage to get the hang of it. I find it slightly annoying that sometimes I could not get the accurate spots or the edges to mask and recolor them. Moving on, I find that this new knowledge can be valuable to bring life into monochromatic photos or photos that had lost its colors. It is a skill that someday I could add into my work in the future.
Observation
When images overlaps with one another, I thought that it was going to be a pure mess. However, I was proven wrong that even a messy composition can be transform into a form of art. It tells a story of its own and sometimes it does not have to thus it can be just a mess of things you like or hate. I comprehended this by observing other student's work. They all have their own creativity and aesthetics. It can be express through their emotions, their personalities, their hobbies or mainly just for aesthetic purposes.
Findings
Throughout my findings, collage does not necessarily need to have rules. However, I realized that sometimes it is important to pay attention to what we cut so that we do not miss out or cut out wrong images. In some situation, using tape can be more useful and less messy compared to using glue. It is also convenient because it can be adjusted if I make mistakes.
