INSTRUCTIONS
Exercises: Fundamentals of Environment Design
For these specific exercises, we were instructed and taught the fundamentals of drawings by forming silhouettes, thumbnails, values and etc. These exercises mostly trained me to get my values and perspective right so that the composition did not seem out of proportion.
I think perspective is something that I still need to get used to which requires lots of practice. Forming silhouettes and playing around with values did take me a while to get the hang of it, but it was insightful to better understand the placement of spaces between foreground, background and middle ground.
Requirements for exercises below:
1. Perspective drawings
2. Composition
3. Value Painting
4. Ambience
5. Color management
6. Vignette set design
7. Photo bashing (textures)

Project 1: Exterior and Landscape Design
In project 1, we were introduced to worldbuilding, where we designed an imaginative world while ensuring that every creative design has reason behind it.
To begin the project, we were required to develop a storyline to serves as the foundation of our designs, whether it is cute or in tragedy. Initially, I had a rough time to form a specific concept and stick with it because there were too many ideas to explore. It gave me time to narrow down the exploration ideas. The storyline I created was centered around a lone warrior who is a mastery of weapons and deeply connected to nature and spirits.
Summary of story:
This world is set in a fantasy genre, inspired with folk culture with a mixture of medieval art style. The house is built out of plain sight, far to be seen from human civilization with lack of visits. Based on the character's lifestyle, she as a lone warrior prefers to be close with nature rather than human contacts. The house was built by her own hands filled with her weapon creations and mythical items with cultural significance.
Final
In this project, I tried to adapt the same techniques that I learnt from the exercises into Project 1 by starting with silhouettes, forming breakdowns and drawing compositions.
Project 2: Interior and Set Design
For project 2, I designed four different layouts by including a bedroom, a main hall, a dining room and a blacksmith. By design the interior, I ensured to keep in mind about how the exterior was created so that the interior complements the exterior, so the space feels unified and consistent with its environment. Simultaneously, I tried blocking out one part of the interior in Blender after I set down the sketches.

Blocking out furniture and assets
In this final project, I proceeded on completing my 3D block out for the bedroom in Blender. The starting of the process was quite slow. It took me quite a while to understand the basics of the tools that are needed consistently. I referred to a lot of tutorials to use it properly and to find out useful shortcuts to make the pace a little bit faster. I was mostly confused at first about the bevel tool and adding new segments. I didn't understand the purpose of it due to the lack of use but in the end I relied on it quite a lot once I get the hang of it and made my sculpting process much easier.
In this block out process, I made sure to get the shape somewhat correct and extrude, scale them in certain areas to add slight details and make it more defined. With certain objects with holes, I used bridge faces to connect all the segments, leaving behind an empty hole. Once I have set out the assets, I rearranged them into a composition based on the interior sketches.
After I completed the block out, I added the colors and materials by opening the shader editor panel. This allowed me to add the base colors and adjusted the nodes for the objects. When it comes to glass materials, I simply reduced the roughness of the materials until it forms a reflection. In certain cases, I added textures to certain objects and connected them to the base color by importing images. Adding colors into an objects made it feel satisfying but I knew shading is a tool filled with many possibilities and I hoped to explore even further in the future.
Lighting process was a fun exploration. I added and adjusted the lightings in certain angles to make the area looked brighter. As for the lanterns, I placed area lights with the right shapes around the object and changed the color to create a small ambience with warm tones. In addition to that, I added some dark blue tones in the window to set a night setting.
After I have completed the rendering process, I set the cameras into different perspectives to capture the images for export. At the beginning, I set it into an orthographic position to get an overall view of the block out. Then, I started exploring with different perspectives, adjusting the resolution and played with all types of angles using perspective type.
REFLECTION
Overall, it was a meaningful experience. I really had a fun time sculpting even though there were frustrating moments. Environment design taught me how a space can tell a story through its visual and atmosphere. By considering elements such as color, materials and layout. I learned how environments can reflect culture, mood and purpose. This project helped me understand the importance of designing spaces that feel cohesive, believable, and connected to the world they exist in.
