INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2

Requirements
The students are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artefact and material.

Data Collection Methods
Some of the methods by which you can collect data:
  • Observation study.
  • Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, you may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if you deem their presentation useful for further research).
  •  Online and/or actual physical material* visual research of the selected culture (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.

a) Final Topic Decision:
Based on our previous proposal, we have finalized our topic based on our lecturer's feedback and narrowed it down to fit our (desired product: Surprise Box).

Geisha Glam: The Surprised Box Inspired by Geisha Makeup

Preliminary Research:
When we received our topic, we were quite perplexed because we lacked the knowledge about the definition of Geisha Glam: Surprise Box. The topic can be entailed to anything and therefore we listed down the options and possibilities of specific information to provide a detailed research.
  • Mystery & Intrigue: The term "Surprise Box" suggests an element of mystery and intrigue. It implies that the contents of the box are unknown and may contain unexpected surprises related to Geisha culture.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Given the cultural significance of geisha makeup, the "Geisha Glam" theme suggests an appreciation for Japanese culture and a desire to pay homage to its traditions with respect and authenticity.
  • Artistic Expression: Geisha makeup is a form of artistic expression, characterized by its intricate designs and symbolic meanings.
  • Luxurious Presentation: Given the premium nature of geisha-inspired makeup, the surprise box may feature luxurious packaging and presentation, enhancing the unboxing experience and creating a sense of indulgence.
  • Glamorous Aesthetics: The term "Glam" implies a focus on glamour and sophistication, suggesting that the makeup products in the surprise box may be designed to create bold and glamorous looks reminiscent of the iconic beauty of geisha.
b) Data Research Method:
Our group decided to approach three different methods in this research for data collecting:
  • Surveys and Questionnaires
  • Interview Japanese Local
  • Photo Collection and Observation
1) Photo Collection & Observation
During this part of the week, we travelled to Osaka and Kyoto, Japan for data collecting to get a full experience and perspective on their culture. This experience immensely assisted us to find intricate data and details about the geisha culture. We took a couple of photos and observed our surroundings for inspiration.

2) Interview Japanese Local

For our next method, we prepared interview questions regarding to geisha culture for a Japanese local. Our purpose is to discover what a Japanese local thinks and says about their own culture and what special meanings do they possess. Our initial plan was to gather as many interviewees as we can but we only managed to gather 1 response.

3) Surveys & Questionnaires
Lastly, we used Google Form to create a survey and more questions regarding geisha culture. We wish to gather anonymous responses to satisfy our curiosities, gathering intel and results.

FEEDBACKS
Week 4:
General Feedback:
Study trip week in Osaka, Japan.
Specific Feedback: With the given topic, I suggested to find some make up products that are inspired by geisha make up, designed boxes that includes traditional Japanese or geisha elements such as bento boxes, makeup boxes and etc. You may also look up on their kimono style.
