LECTURES

Week 1

a) 100 Camera Angles, Shots and Movements in Film Making
For the first lecture, we discovered hundreds of different camera angles that includes the ultimate list of camera shots. Camera angle is crucial in visual storytelling which can evoke certain emotions, exploring different perspective and point of view, a clearer narrative, bringing out interesting visual compositions and setting up the mood and atmosphere.

b) The 16 types of Camera Shots & Angles
With a similar concept, this website introduces another way of camera shots & angles by using transitions and basics of animatics to unlock different sides of perspective.

c) IVN 01 - Character Design Basics
This session introduces the basics and principles of character design that we need to consider to make the characters more appealing. It gives us new insights about how simple different shapes can be combined to form extraordinary characters. This also tells us that colors are essentially important to express different kinds of emotion.

Week 2

a) Chiaroscuro
In this lecture, a new term called "Chiaroscuro" teaches us a technique between the use of light and dark to create illusion which directly translates "light-dark" in Italy. It helps to increase dramatic tension, create sensational effect, attract attention and make tasteful composition.

Week 3

a) Composition / Visual Shots
For the duration of this lecture, we will be learning about the different types of composition and visual shots that can be used as our advantage in our artwork.

Week 4

a) Composition Theory 2 / Perspectives
During this particular lecture, we are taught about the strategies of using different perspectives that we can take into consideration to create an interesting composition in our illustrations. A good example is shown through an infamous painting called " Las Meninas". The explanation through its composition and hidden secrets that makes it so captivating are truly inspiring.

Week 5

a) Composition Theory 3 / Fore, Mid and Background
In this presentation, it teaches us another composition theory that each artwork requires three elements of foreground, middle-ground, and background which is effective to create a sense of space and differentiate which part is the main focus.

This short animation film uses the main three elements to its full potential like a colorful pop art book and it is incredible. Not only the composition is well designed, but the storytelling is funny and comedic. It really brings out the badass and the charisma of each grandmas.

TUTORIALS

Lab 1: Pen Tool
In this tutorial, we began with fun activities and exercises that familiarize ourselves with the pen tool. We were also given a brief tutorial about different techniques to trace objects that are convenient to us.

Lab 2: Chiaroscuro
For our second tutorial, we learned a new technique called "Chiaroscuro" by incorporating light and dark tones to create illusion and shadows. Based on the lectures, this is a useful skill to form dimension and increase dramatic tension for our characters. This assisted us to implement the skills into our projects.

Fig. 0.11 Tracing Image with pen tool, Week 4

We began by tracing the silhouette of a pear image using a pen tool.

Fig. 0.12 Cutting Tools, Week 4

Once we have traced the silhouette's pair, we used three different cutting tools which shows different results. This gave us many options on which cutting tool suits the best and which would be easier based on the situation.

Fig. 0.13 Transforming Pears, Week 4

We transformed these pears to make it looked cut and showed the inner layer of the pear. To achieve this, we used a knife tool and add an eclipse tool underneath while adjusting the shape.

Adding color palettes to Library
Our lecturer introduced us a cool way to add color palettes into the library from a picture or a color wheel. We used a specific website that brought us so many good choices of combination colors.

Lab 3: Transparency Gradient and Noise

EXERCISES

Task 1: Vormator Challenge

Requirements / Instructions:
Vormator is the ultimate challenge of your creativity: the aim of project is to give each student the chance to show their ability to create a stunning piece with limited means.

Each person will get the exact same set of , the . With these shapes you are challenged to create your own unique design, within the limitations provided in the Rulebook. Designers are thus challenged to create a unique piece within a strict set of rules. It all comes down to pure skills and creativity in this project.

What exactly are you allowed to do and what isn’t allowed with the Elements? The following rules have to be followed when creating your artwork: You  allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Elements You  have to use all the Elements Scaling is allowed, but  proportionally, so  skewing or free transform. You  add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fit The use of color is unrestricted; you can create your own color schemes (e.g. use adobe Color). You allowed to use gradients. The Elements may be filled, the use of strokes is allowed. You are  allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows).

Tutorial Session:

1) Pen Tool
To start off with our exercise, we began a simple tutorial on how to trace objects or silhouettes through mini games by using a pen tool. It will train us to hone our skills, which is essential and needed for our upcoming projects. With the minigames, it makes the class more enjoyable and interactive.

2) Progression:

a) Tracing Vormator Shapes
Once we have completed the minigame and familiarized ourselves with the pen tool, we began to test it out on the given template that include certain shapes that will be utilized to allow us to form a desired character.

Fig. 1.2 Vormator Shapes (traced), Week 2

b) Visual Reference
After I have finished tracing the given shapes, I began my research by collecting a bunch of visual references to gather inspiration for my desired character. I decided to go for nature-related creatures such as pixies, mushrooms, fairies, thumbelina and etc. I tried to expand my options by visualizing the elements while referring to the shapes at the same time.

Fig. 1.3 Visual Reference, Week 3

c) Sketches
Once i have narrowed down by options, I began to sketch out a few ideas by putting the shapes in mind to form my character. At first, my initial idea is to design a cute, evolve mushroom but I have limited ideas on what sort of silhouette that I can form with the shapes. Therefore, I changed my ideas to fairies or specifically a cute fae spirit.

d) Digitization
After i have sketched out my visualized character, I decided to proceed with the digitization by forming out the silhouette with its color scheme just to have a proper outlook. Initially, I did not have a clue in mind on how I want the body part look like. With a bit of improvisation, I added some wings that makes it look like a long, frilly skirt.

Fig. 1.5 Simple sketches, Week 3

Color exploration:
I tested out different color palettes that can go well with the character. Through these colors, I was inspired by following the theme of different seasons such as summer, fall, spring and winter.
